Re: What Happened to . . .Explained

XXXXXXXX@webtv.net (XXXXXXXX):
I was in the newsgroup just last night, and then today it refused to acknowledge existing. Then it came back "on" again. Strange indeed!

For future reference:

Each WebTV unit, when it is registered, is assigned a category which corresponds to the group of servers that will service its requests (and which also store email, favorites, etc. for the accounts on that unit.) There are several servers in each category cluster which run "newsd", the server-side component of the WebTV newsreader software. When a server is rebooted, newsd asks the master news server for a list of available newsgroups. newsreader is supposed to update the list every 24 hours, but due to a bug, it doesn't always do so. As a result, some newsd servers in a cluster will know about a new newsgroup while other servers in the same cluster don't. If you disconnect from a server that knows about a new group and later reconnect and are handed a server that doesn't know about it, the group will appear to vanish.

WebTV systems admins can force the servers to reload the newsgroups list. Email to mailto:usenet@corp.webtv.net when groups don't show up may accelerate this process. But they'll usually be available within 24 hours.
