The announcement that alt.discuss.config has become semi-moderated, in the same way that the "open clubs" will be.

alt.discuss.config is now moderated

As promised, alt.discuss.config has been converted to a moderated newsgroup using the "open club" system (anyone who has not been banned from the group is allowed to post in it. Since no one is currently banned, that means that everyone can still post here.)

Anyone who flames in this group, engages in personal attacks against either newsgroup proposers or other WebTV subscribers, or posts excessively off-topic articles will be banned. If I believe that the infraction is a result of ignorance, I will issue a warning on the first offence.

If you are banned, all accounts on your box will be banned as well.

If you are banned, you will remain banned until I am convinced that you will adhere to the posting guidelines for this group. If I have to ban you more than once, you should assume it will be a long while before I let you back in.

An "official" version of these comments will be posted to alt.discuss and here in a day or so.

Fair Warning

Enough is enough. alt.discuss.config exists for discussion of the structure of the alt.discuss hierarchy (i.e., newsgroup naming) and by extension the rules and mechanisms by which alt.discuss newsgroups are created. It has become difficult to find the relevant discussions here amid all the flaming and conspiracy blather.

In the next week or two, alt.discuss.config will be converted to a moderated newsgroup using the "open club" model (a bot will allow any article to be posted to the group if the sender or the sender's box hasn't been banned.) I will operate as group owner. The group name will not be changed.

In this role, I will ban anyone (ANYONE!) who flames, who posts ad hominem attacks (attacks against the poster rather the idea under discussion), who posts off-topic material, or who is otherwise rude or abusive. Since I do not always have time to read alt.discuss.config every day, it is possible that I will not respond to something offensive immediately. If I read a.d.config and I find a pissing contest in progress, I will ban all of the contestants - everyone participating in the offensive thread (even if they are trying to defend themselves) will be banned. If someone insults you in alt.discuss.config, IGNORE IT. I will deal with it. Trolling to try to get others to flame here will be treated as flaming and will result in the troll being banned.

Incidentally, yes and no vote lists are off-topic. Which way someone decides to vote and how they make that decision is no one's business but theirs.

If you get banned from alt.discuss.config, you may get yourself allowed back in by convincing me in email that there is a good reason to let you back in.

Welcome to the future.
